建立陪伴關係之後,更重要的是『理解』。理解並非僅止於了解病人的病史或治療需求,而是深入理解其生命故事、家庭關係、文化背景、宗教信仰及價值信念,並尊重每位病人對疾病與生命意義的不同詮釋。當護理師願意以開放的態度傾聽病人的生命經驗,而非以自身價值觀加以評斷,便能建立更具信任與尊重的治療性人際關係。
陪伴與理解的最終目的,在於陪伴病人重新尋見『盼望』。盼望並非否認疾病或死亡的存在,也不是給予不切實際的期待,而是在疾病歷程中,協助病人重新看見生命仍然具有價值,仍有值得珍惜的人際關係、未完成的心願,以及支持自己繼續前行的力量。對有宗教信仰的病人而言,盼望可能來自對上帝的信靠;對沒有宗教信仰的病人而言,盼望則可能來自家人的陪伴、生命成就、人生價值或未來目標。
因此,靈性護理應尊重不同文化與信仰背景,以病人的生命經驗作為照護的中心,使『陪伴』、『理解』與『盼望』成為回應病人靈性需求的重要歷程。
